Cornell University advanced to the 2025 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship game with a hard-fought 11-9 victory over Penn State in the national semifinals at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. With the win, Cornell sets up a highly anticipated title showdown against Maryland on Memorial Day, marking the Big Red’s ninth appearance in the championship game and their first since 2022.

The semifinal clash was a tightly contested battle through the first half, with both teams trading goals and defensive stands. Penn State entered the game with momentum and confidence after a strong postseason run, and early on, the Nittany Lions held a narrow 6-5 lead midway through the third quarter. But then Cornell took control with a game-defining surge.

Over a span of just under seven minutes, Cornell reeled off five consecutive goals, flipping the score and taking a commanding 10-6 lead. Senior midfielder Hugh Kelleher was instrumental in that run, notching a hat trick and anchoring the Big Red offense with poise and leadership. Michael Long also had a standout performance, recording two goals and three assists, showcasing his versatility and playmaking skills in critical moments.

Cornell’s offensive firepower, however, wasn’t the only storyline. Their defense proved to be just as pivotal. Led by a disciplined unit and a strong performance in goal, Cornell neutralized Penn State’s top scorer, CJ Kirst, holding him scoreless for the first time all season. It was a defensive effort marked by communication, timely slides, and an ability to force Penn State into uncomfortable shooting positions.

On the Penn State side, sophomore Liam Matthews delivered an impressive performance with four goals, including two highlight-reel behind-the-back scores that kept the Nittany Lions within striking distance. Matt Traynor added a pair of goals, and Penn State mounted a late rally in the fourth quarter, trimming the deficit to just one goal. However, the Big Red’s composure in the final minutes, including key ground balls and clock management, allowed them to stave off the comeback.

The victory extends Cornell’s winning streak to 13 games, setting a new program record with 17 wins in a single season. Head coach Connor Buczek praised his team’s resilience and execution under pressure, crediting their preparation and unity for carrying them through one of the season’s most challenging matchups.

With this win, Cornell advances to the NCAA Championship game where they will face perennial powerhouse Maryland, who defeated Virginia in the other semifinal. The title game offers a rematch of the 2022 national final, which Maryland won. This time, however, the Big Red are entering with greater depth, experience, and momentum.

As Cornell chases its first NCAA men’s lacrosse national title since 1977, the program stands on the cusp of history. With a balanced attack, disciplined defense, and veteran leadership, they have all the components necessary to make a legitimate title run. Monday’s championship promises to be a thrilling conclusion to a memorable tournament and could mark a crowning moment for one of college lacrosse’s most storied programs.
