Bronx, NY – The New York Yankees asserted their dominance with a commanding 10-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, igniting their current homestand with a powerful offensive display. What started as a pitchers’ duel quickly transformed into a thunderous batting practice for the Bronx Bombers after a significant rain delay, leaving the Mariners reeling in the series opener.
The pre-game buzz was palpable as two American League playoff contenders squared off. Seattle, entering the contest having won 15 of their last 23, looked to continue their strong run, while the Yankees aimed to bounce back from a recent six-game slide. For much of the early innings, it was a classic AL matchup, with both starting pitchers holding their own.
Rookie right-hander Will Warren, who had struggled in his previous outing in Toronto, delivered a much-needed gem for the Yankees. Warren was phenomenal through 5 2/3 scoreless innings, showcasing poise and control. He expertly navigated the Mariners’ lineup, scattering just four hits while striking out four and walking two, earning his sixth win of the season (6-4). His performance was particularly impressive considering a 35-minute rain delay in the fifth inning threatened to disrupt his rhythm.
On the other side, Seattle’s Logan Gilbert (2-3) was equally impressive early on. Gilbert retired the first 11 Yankee hitters he faced, demonstrating the form that has made him a key arm for the Mariners this season. However, the rain delay proved to be a turning point. After the stoppage, Gilbert struggled to regain his velocity and feel for his pitches, and the Yankees’ bats quickly capitalized.
The scoreless deadlock was finally broken in the bottom of the fifth. Paul Goldschmidt led off with a single, and after a series of events, Oswald Peraza hit a slow chopper that found its way through the infield, scoring Goldschmidt and ending Seattle’s impressive team-record streak of 33 scoreless innings. It was a crucial, albeit unconventional, play that opened the floodgates.
The true offensive explosion came in the sixth inning. With Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger setting the table, Giancarlo Stanton stepped to the plate and absolutely obliterated a three-run homer into right-center field. It was Stanton’s second home run of the season, a powerful reminder of his immense capabilities. Just three batters later, Austin Wells joined the long-ball party, launching a two-run shot off reliever Casey Legumina. Wells’ blast marked his third consecutive game with a home run, highlighting his burgeoning power at the plate.
The Yankees continued to pile on in the seventh. Aaron Judge, ever the slugger, added his 34th home run of the season with a solo shot, further extending New York’s lead. Jazz Chisholm Jr. chipped in with an RBI double, and Paul Goldschmidt capped off the four-run inning with a two-run single, pushing the score to a commanding 10-0. Bellinger and Goldschmidt were offensive stalwarts for the Yankees, each collecting three hits in the rout.
Despite the lopsided score, the Seattle Mariners did manage to avoid a shutout and provide their fans with a glimmer of hope in the late innings. In the eighth, Julio Rodriguez ripped an RBI double, breaking the Yankees’ shutout bid. Moments later, Cal Raleigh stepped up and belted his major league-leading 36th home run of the season, a two-run blast that not only cut into the deficit but also set a new Mariners franchise record for most homers before the All-Star break, surpassing the legendary Ken Griffey Jr.’s mark from 1998. It was a highlight moment for Raleigh in an otherwise tough night for Seattle.
Ultimately, the Yankees’ offensive surge and Warren’s stellar performance proved too much for the Mariners. The 10-3 victory marks a significant statement for New York as they look to build momentum and climb the American League standings. The series continues tomorrow, with the Mariners’ rookie Logan Evans (3-2, 2.96 ERA) set to face off against Cam Schlittler, who will make his Major League debut for the Yankees. Baseball fans will surely be eagerly anticipating if the Mariners can bounce back or if the Yankees will continue their dominant hitting display.
